Code Politics: Federal Election 2008

These charts show twitter activity for the Canadian Federal Election English Debate that took place on October 2, 2008.

 

While Canadian bloggers voiced strong opinions both in favour and opposed to Stephane Dion’s Carbon tax, the blogosphere was nearly silent on Ontario and Quebec’s new cap and trade initiative. A sample of blogs posting on both topics (from May 28-June 3rd) found that only 20% of bloggers voiced opinions (10% in favour, 10% opposed) on the cap and trade initiative. Conversely, 80% of bloggers voiced opinions on a carbon tax, 50% opposed and only 30% in favour. (see chart below)

Blogs: Mutiny in the Liberal Blogosphere

Libloggers dominated the top 5 blog posts this past week. Liblogger “apply-liberally” declared his intention not to support the Liberal party and withdraw from Liblogs. All other posts criticized the Liberal party for not standing up to the Conservatives and for failing repeatedly to call for an election.

This week a site dedicated to criticizing the Ed Stelmach campaign in Alberta received significant links from the national partisan blogosphere. The site, entitled http://www.rottentories.ca(a parody of the film/music review site www.rottentomatoes.com), is registered to well known Liberal blogger Calgary Grit.
