Description:

New Media Research Methods Seminar

Presented by Zachary Devereaux and Rob King

This presentation will explore current new media research techniques, with a focus on Internet based 'webtools' and research suites that are rapidly multiplying online. The presentation will introduce and briefly explain new research tools, some of which have been developed here onsite at the Ryerson campus by the Infoscape Research Lab. The goal of the presentation is to give participants a basic familiarity with 'cross-platform' new media research methods that apply a variety of techniques such as citation analysis, relational mapping, textual analysis, code language analysis, geospatial analysis and hyperlink network mapping.

These techniques easily lend themselves to current research agendas and are particularly relevant for studying issues, networks, and events online.

The workshop will progress through successive steps: review of objectives, review of analytical resources, review of data types and methods, and finally demonstrative examples of research methods with theme generated by the workshop participants.
