Blogs: Mutiny in the Liberal Blogosphere
Libloggers dominated the top 5 blog posts this past week. Liblogger “apply-liberally” declared his intention not to support the Liberal party and withdraw from Liblogs. All other posts criticized the Liberal party for not standing up to the Conservatives and for failing repeatedly to call for an election.
News
A Canadian Press release about a Liberal motion criticizing the NDP and BQ for defeating the Martin government and thus allowing the Tories to win a minority government received the most links from the blogosphere last week. Stories about Conservative opposition to the Liberal’s motion to establish education savings tax credits, Tory ridings in Quebec getting more federal government funding than other Quebec ridings, and a government initiative to require the storing of greenhouse gases by oil-sand companies and other businesses made up the rest of the list.
YouTube
Both Stephen Harper and Jack Layton received significant attention on YouTube last week. During the week of February 22, 2008 Harper’s most viewed clip received 1369 hits compared to 9536 this week. In addition, Layton’s most viewed video during the week of February 22 received 778 hits compared to 4207 hits this week. This increase was due to the release of information by Canadian government officials regarding Barack Obama’s stance on NAFTA. An MSNBC report of a Question Period exchange between Layton and Harper also received substantial views. In a major coup, Jack Layton’s interview with Lou Dobbs on NAFTA was finally able to displace “Jack Layton Slip (Big Ass)” as his most viewed clip.
Stephane Dion’s most viewed clip for this week was of a group protesting his position on the Canadian Forces mission in Afghanistan while he campaigned for Bob Rae in advance of the March 17 by-election. Some of the protestors could be heard in this clip questioning Dion’s role as Leader of the Opposition. Similarly, Dion’s second most viewed clip for this week (“Liberal Ship is Sinking”) is mocking him for the number Liberal MPs retiring during his leadership. The only aspect of these findings for Dion that could be perceived as remotely favourable is that both these clips received little attention compared to the Layton and Harper’s top clips for this week.
