Findings from 8 September to 15 September

Week Ending September 15, 2006 (see charts below)

Executive Summary

  • Ignatieff continues to dominate the blogosphere, particularly when compared against his coverage in the news. He received 28% of all the coverage in the blogosphere compared to only 17% of all the news coverage. Only Rae (17%), Dryden (14%) and Dion (11%) received more than 10% of the total blog coverage of the candidates.
  • For the first time in 3 weeks Bob Rae overtook Ignatieff to receive the most coverage in the news of all the candidates.
  • Overall this weeks news coverage was more evenly split among the top tier candidates (19%-11%), while the less popular candidates saw substantially more coverage, (most notably Volpe who jumped from 1%-6% of the total news coverage of the candidates).


Candidate's coverage in the News

  • Bob Rae (19%) – Rae received the most coverage of all the candidates this past week, just 1% less than last week.
  • Michael Ignatieff (17%) – Ignatieff's coverage in the news continues to drop in coverage, week after week (from 28% for the week ending 9/1, to 26% last week, to only 17% the weekend ending 9/15%.
  • Gerrard Kennedy (13%) - Kennedy's coverage increases 4% over last week
  • Stephane Dion ( 12%) - Dion's coverage drops 5% over last week, making this week's % roughly his average coverage for the past 3 weeks.
  • Ken Dryden (11%) - Dryden receives his lowest coverage of the past three week (17% last week, 13% the week before).
  • Scott Brison (9%) - Brison's coverage remains relatively constant, week after week (between 14%-7%)

Other Noteworthy News Changes:

All the less popular candidates received substantially more coverage over the past week, from previous weeks lows of 1-3% to this week: 4% (Fry, Findlay), 5% (Bennett), and 6% (Volpe, who had previously never received more than 1%).

Candidates Coverage in the Blogosphere:

  • Michael Ignatieff (28%) Roughly the same as last week (29% ), but down considerably from week ending 9/1 (49%). Continues to receive substantially more coverage in the blogosphere compared to new coverage (this week 28% blog coverage vs. only 17% news coverage).
  • Bob Rae (17%) Showed little change from last week's coverage in the blogosphere (16%). In contrast to Ignatieff, since 9/1 Rae's coverage is roughly the same in both the news and blogopheres.
  • Ken Dryden (14%) After a low of 4% on 9/1, Dryden's coverage remains in the 14-15% range, just slightly higher than his coverage in the news.
  • Stephane Dion (11%) Drops slightly from last week (15%). His coverage is roughly the same in both spheres.
  • Gerard Kennedy (9%) After initial high of 16% on 9/1 Kennedy remains steady between 8-9% over the past 2 weeks. This week marks first time that Kennedy's coverage in the blogosphere has not matched his coverage in the news (9% for blogs, 13% for news).
  • The remaining candidates lead by Brison (7% blogs this week) have seen very little change in their coverage either week over week or compared against their coverage in the news (except for Volpe). For blog coverage ending 9/15: Fry (5%), Volpe (3%, he received a high of 6% news coverage this past week), Findlay (3%), Bennett (3%).
